The Cuban exile history is rewritten every day with the arrival of every Cuban who escapes from the island to start a new life in America.

Those voyages are the heart of a new book: Cubans: An Epic Journey, a four-year-long project led by the group FACE (Facts About Cuban Exiles) and published by Reedy Press.

The 800-page book, written by 31 Cuban and American professionals, examines the history of Cuban exiles in America — and particularly in Miami.

“The book reflects the good, the bad and the regular about Cubans. We do not judge the facts cited and we don’t try to hide anything,” said veteran journalist Guillermo Martinez, 70, the book’s co-editor and the first Cuban to hold a seat on the editorial board of The Miami Herald.

To complete the book, Martinez joined forces with Sam Verdeja, also a former Miami Herald executive and the first president of FACE, which was created in 1982 with the aim of providing a complete picture of Cubans and Cuban Americans.

  1. Five decades, how often in history has there ever been another people exiling from one place for over five decades, or more accurately 79 years plus is you count 1933, and earlier. And still, Cubans scattered world-wide have not abandoned Martí’s dream for a free Cuba.
