It appears that along with the Cuban people, Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez has become another victim of the vaunted Castro dictatorship health care system.

Breaking: Chavez medical emergency?

Hugo Chavez en Route to Brazilian Hospital with Complications?

Brazilian media is reporting that ailing Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez will make an emergency trip to Brazil after allegedly suffering intestinal burns during his radiation treatment in Cuba. Chávez, who in June of last year revealed that Cuban doctors had removed a cancerous tumor from his abdominal region, has been going back-and-forth from the island nation for treatment. The Associated Press reported earlier on Thursday that the Venezuelan leader had returned to his country on Wednesday night from radiation treatment in Cuba.

He may be headed to the hospital Sirio e Libanês in Sao Paulo, where Dilma Rouseff, Lula, and Paraguay’s Fernando Lugo have been treated for cancer.

Brazilian journalist Merval Pereira says that the emergency trip is being spun by the Venezuelan government as a visit to Lula. Pereira has spoken to doctors at the hospital who so far have made no preparations for Chavez’s arrival, but allow that Chavez could be admitted for tests. Pereira also says that there is a big fight going on between chavistas as to whether Chavez should travel or not, due to security and secrecy issues.

  1. I’m still skeptical. There’s a surfeit of drama and incident here, like a bad soap opera. I know it’s hard to conceive that this whole cancer thing could be a hoax, but remember who’s involved and what’s at stake.

This is not a normal scenario, certainly nothing comparable to the situation in a typical first-world democracy. Chavez is as unevolved as he looks, and he wants power for life. He has no concept of or doesn’t care about things like propriety, decorum, probity or gravitas. His demagoguery and populism are anything but sophisticated, and he typically plays to the cheapest seats, so to speak. He’s all about lowest common denominator.

It may be that, fearing an electoral defeat, which he’d never accept but would look extremely bad disregarding, he’s opted for a kind of Evita gambit (which need not have been his own idea). In other words, play the stricken but heroically persevering leader, determined to beat the odds for the sake of “the people,” refusing to fail the “revolution” and, somehow, carrying on and pulling through—the whole time milking the thing for all the sympathy and votes it’s worth.

Yes, there are people limited enough to fall for this (remember, we’re not talking Switzerland here). Thus, if he can avoid an undeniable electoral loss, he can retain power without going blatantly rogue and incontestably illegitimate. Don’t put it past him.
