The Cardinal’s ‘curious phrase’

On his blog Enrisco, writer Enrique Del Risco picks out what he found to be the most curious phrase uttered by Cardinal Jaime Ortega during his speech at Harvard University this week (my translation):

The phrase I found most curious was “the government has told me to mediate with all of you,” which according to the Cardinal, is what he told the Ladies in White during their conversations in 2010. What I find curious about this is that up until now, it has been said that the mediation had been an initiative of the church and had been part of its efforts to serve as a reconciler. What the Cardinal is referring to in this statement, however, is an initiative of the government (we assume to relieve the pressure it was feeling) that the Church carried out to its fulfillment. That phrase, for certain, changes everything.
