After viewing this film depicting the excellent work that Harry Wu has undertaken to expose the sale of Chinese prison-camp products to the West, I agree with its conclusion that as long as consumers demand cheap products, human rights will take a back seat. It is not difficult to reach the conclusion that the reason why Title III of the Helms-Burton (Libertad) Act remains unenforced by the United States Government is the same — the greed of consumers, business entrepreneurs, and bureaucrats. Title III provisions attempt to redress the illegal confiscation of private property in Cuba, and allow Americans to sue people or companies who used Cuban property seized after Fidel Castro’s 1959 revolution. To no one’s surprise, every U.S. President since Clinton to Obama, Republican and Democrat alike, has waived enforcement of Title III every six months.
