Hard times call for hard truths. Some people can’t handle the truth. So they revert to killing the messenger.
49.1%: Percent of the population that lives in a household where at least one member received some type of government benefit in the first quarter of 2011.
Cutting government spending is no easy task, and it’s made more complicated by recent Census Bureau data showing that nearly half of the people in the U.S. live in a household that receives at least one government benefit, and many likely received more than one.
The 49.1% of the population in a household that gets benefits is up from 30% in the early 1980s and 44.4% as recently as the third quarter of 2008.
The increase in recent years is likely due in large part to the lingering effects of the recession. As of early 2011, 15% of people lived in a household that received food stamps, 26% had someone enrolled in Medicaid and 2% had a member receiving unemployment benefits. Families doubling up to save money or pool expenses also is likely leading to more multigenerational households. But even without the effects of the recession, there would be a larger reliance on government.
The fact is the democrats, for generations, have constantly promised entitlements to the middle and lower classes in order to consistently buy their votes, always using a class warfare like mentality that 1. those people have too much and you have nothing, and 2. elect the democrat to get it for you. Once in the government entitlement system people either find it hard to break free and on their own, or really do not feel the need to do so if they are being fed, housed and cared for on a daily basis … and now without requirement of working. The political fact is that those in the government system do not contribute to it (and I do not count sales tax). Romney is NOT saying he is not worried about those people in that he is not worried about their needs. He is just stating fact that politically they will never move over to him in an election and he knows it. They are bought and paid for democrat votes. The MSM and the Obama campign will never relate that in proper context.
Thankfully Romney is not backing away from having stated the cold hard facts.
I’m with Mitt Romney. I want the entire video released. The country needs to stop pussyfooting around the truth. Let’s have a serious adult conversation on this … and without the MSM acting like childish idiots shouting with outrage in the streets about how Mitt Romney is a racist for even bringing up the facts. Who really wants to move the country in the direction of solving its problems, and who just wants to keep throwing more and more money we just do not have on our problems?
For the record, about it being very hard to get the hell out from under the government thumb … Just ask GM:
GM executives have grown increasingly frustrated with that ownership, and the stigma of being known as “Government Motors.” Executives have said the U.S.’s shadow is a drag on its reputation and hurts the company’s ability to recruit talent because of pay restrictions. Privately, executives are also irked at the continued curbs on corporate jet use.
Earlier this summer, GM floated a plan with Treasury officials to repurchase 200 million of the roughly 500 million shares the U.S. holds in the auto maker, according to people familiar with the discussions. Under the plan, Treasury would sell the remaining shares through a public stock offering.
But Treasury officials aren’t interested in GM’s offer at the current price and aren’t in a rush to offload shares, according to people familiar with the matter. The biggest reason: A sale now would leave the government with a hefty loss on its investment.
Now, imagine the government running everyone’s healthcare…
UPDATE: HotAir’s Ed Morrissey has this to say about that: “No, Romney didn’t just lose the election”
