State Department Whitewashing Terrorism Reports for Cuba and Iran, Says Ros-Lehtinen

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Middle East Subcommittee, made the following statement in response to the State Department’s release of the Congressionally mandated Country Reports on Terrorism for 2014. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

“The State Department’s latest Country Reports on Terrorism demonstrates, at an unprecedented level, this administration’s irresponsible practice of putting politics before reality by omitting key information and events in order to sell its narrative. State spends more time defending the regimes in Cuba and Iran in these latest reports than in providing, as required by law, the full and complete picture of their support for terrorist activities inside and outside their borders. For Cuba, the administration neglected to note this year’s interception of an illegal Chinese shipment of weapons destined for the island, as well as a report last year by the United Nations confirming the Castro regime’s attempt to smuggle military hardware to North Korea in violation of international sanctions. Similarly, for Iran, State provides the bare minimum of information about the regime’s support for terrorism around the world, including in the Western Hemisphere, and makes the disingenuous claim that Iran has complied with the Joint Plan of Action on its nuclear weapons program.

“The administration should come clean about the regimes in Cuba and Iran instead of making a political calculation to whitewash their support for terror from these reports. The American people deserve the truth about the enemies that this White House is engaging, their connections to terrorism, and the misguided policies that are being pursued on their behalf.”
