Miami Dolphins would be wise to steer clear of Castro-sympathizer Colin Kaepernick

While many have forgotten the photo above of free-agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick wearing a shirt glorifying Fidel Castro and his subsequent remarks defending Cuba’s murderous and blatantly racist apartheid dictator, we can guarantee you the residents of Miami and South Florida have not. Although the Miami Dolphins are in desperate need of a QB, they would be wise to steer clear of Kaepernick. The last thing the Dolphins and this city needs is a Castro-sympathizing dimwit who revels in putting his complete and utter ignorance vis-a-vis Cuba and the apartheid Castro dictatorship on display.

Mike Bianchi in the Orlando Sentinel:

Miami Dolphins could never sign Castro-sympathizing Colin Kaepernick

If there’s one team that absolutely cannot sign the Fidel Castro-sympathizing Colin Kaepernick, it is the Miami Dolphins.

Even if starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill is lost for the season and even if Kaepernick is the most viable option to help the Dolphins make a return to the playoffs, Miami’s vast and vocal Cuban population would explode if their hometown team signed a quarterback who has endorsed a brutal dictator who was responsible for killing thousands of Cubans and incarcerating tens of thousands of political prisoners.

Kaepernick, if you’ll recall, wore a Castro T-shirt last year to a news conference to discuss the oppression of African-Americans. That’s right; he attended an anti-oppression news conference wearing a T-shirt favorably depicting one of the most oppressive dictators in world history.

To make matters worse, Kaepernick, when questioned about the T-shirt, actually lauded Castro for investing so much more on Cuba’s education system than on the country’s prison system. Kaepernick probably never stopped to consider that maybe Castro figured killing prisoners is much cheaper than incarcerating them.

That said, I believe if any NFL team needs a quarterback and Kaepernick is considered the best option for winning games, then he should certainly be signed.

Any team, that is, except Miami.

  1. Oh, but he’d be perfect. I expect the Marlins wish they could hire him. It’s like, you know, diversity and everything. I expect the Cubanoid contingent at the Miami Herald is already preparing suitable admonitory screeds directed at “those people,” urging them to get over it and get with it. After all, we wouldn’t want another scenario like Mandela’s visit to Miami, now would we? You get the idea.

  2. It just hit me: the Dolphins could hire Kaepernick, and for his opening game, the halftime show could be a mini-concert by Los Van Van or Omara Portuondo (assuming she can still emit sound and stand without assistance). Is that brilliant or what? Another option would be to hire Pablito Milanés or, if all else fails, get Gloria Estefan to do the honors. Anything to demonstrate that we’re totally, uh, open-minded, inclusive and, you know, normalized.
