Loosely translated from Marti Noticias:
The Castro regime will be jailing dissident doctor Eduard Cardet at a maximum security prison in Holguín.
On the 30th of November 2016, Cardet was violently arrested and subsequently sentenced to three years behind bars for meeting with the “wrong people” in Miami and for “disrespecting” tyrant Fidel Castro at the time of his death.
So, what, exactly, constitutes “disrespect”?
Cardet’s most offensive statement, considered sufficiently dangerous for a three-year prison sentence in a punishment cell was this: “Castro was a very controversial man, very much hated and rejected by our people.”
The statement was made while he was visiting the United States, where freedom of speech is protected by law. But as soon as he returned to Cuba, he was arrested for speaking his mind.
Amnesty International has taken up his case.
Cardet is a member of the Movimiento Cristiano Liberación –(MCL– The Christian Liberation Movement founded by the murdered dissident Oswaldo Paya.
MCL’s web site has posted a message from Dr. Cardet’s wife, Yaimaris Vecino:“We visited Eduardo today, and, fortunately, he was doing well. His sister was met by a delegation from the Interior Ministry –MININT — led by Major Javier Rojas Montero, who explained that Eduardo has been placed on a “maximum security regimen,” which means that he will probably spend two years in an isolation cell, as if he were a dangerous criminal. Mayor Rojas Montero said that this sentence is due to his political ideas, and that it is legitimately based on article 59, article 7. I fear for my husband’s well-being and I find myself powerless. My hands are tied. I don’t know what will happen to our family, and now we have to deal with this approaching hurricane (Irma) in a house that is in very bad shape.”Continue reading HERE in SpanishTo sign a petition calling for Dr.Cardet’s release, go HERE
