Japiniuyia… 1958 / 2018

Out with the old, in with the new

Happy New Year!

60 years ago, on January 1, 1958, Cuba still existed.

1958 would be its last year on earth, but no one knew that.

1958 was not exactly a calm year — especially after President Eisenhower decided to back Fidel Castro and his 4,000 thieves rather than Fulgencio Bastista — but Cuba was thriving, economically and culturally.

Then — poof! —  on January 1, 1959, Cuba died, and it was reborn as the zombie nation Castrogonia.

So, here’s hoping that a round number will be magic or miraculous: maybe 60 years will be the expiration date for Castrogonia?

Will Castrogonia die this year?  Highly unlikely, but let’s hope so.

And let’s hope that whatever is reborn is better than the 60-year old monster.

Giving up on hope is not an option.

New Year’s resolution for 2018: eat less, drink less, pray more.

Miserere nobis, Domine, Cubani sumus.

Have mercy on us, Lord, we are Cubans.

Feliz y prospero 2018!
