Quotes of the Day – Regular Cubans react to the luxurious Instagram lifestyle of Fidel Castro’s grandson

Via Martí Noticias (my translation):

“This is nothing new, it has always happened, it’s just now they’re no longer afraid to show the power they have.” – Jose Ramon Polo

“Socialism is the equal distribution of poverty. Everyone is poor, except them.” – Activist from the Dialogue Table of the Cuban Youth.

“Where the money comes from I don’t know, but most likely, and like it has been over the last 60 years, the money is coming from the Cuban people. Right now the country is living in a situation where there is no flour for bread, the most basic thing for the Cuban people, and suddenly we see photos of the sons and grandsons of Fidel and Raul, and even Mariela (Castro) throwing dinners and living lives of luxury, it is logical to think, justifiably, the money is coming from funds that never get to the people on the streets.”  – Kirenia Yalit Nuñez, Havana

  1. Part of it is stupidity, like Mariela’s lobster incident: the Castro elite can’t resist showing off on social media to its own crowd. Yes, internet access is very poor for ordinary Cubans, but this kind of shit will get picked up and publicized outside Cuba and will wind up being public knowledge even on the island.

However, part of it is clearly the sense of invulnerability from 60 years of getting away with murder, both literally and figuratively, not to mention the sense of entitlement of the entire Castro clan. Besides, as I’ve said, we’re talking about vulgar white trash, however glorified. It’s all perfectly par for the Castro course.
