Water shortages making fight against coronavirus more difficult for Cubans

Coronavirus is a deadly foe for even the most advanced countries. In Cuba, however, where socialism has destroyed freedoms, the economy, and the nation’s infrastructure, it is infinitely more difficult.

Water shortages when Cubans need it the most

The shortage of water on the island is a problem that affects everyone, particularly in Havana where the government announced that currently 468,721 residents do not have regular access to water service.

The lack of the precious fluid comes at a moment when the population finds itself obligated to take extreme hygienic measures to avoid the spread of coronavirus, requiring frequent washing of all surfaces with soap and water.

Cubans from different regions of the island who spoke with Radio Television Martí said they are concerned about how they will apply these measures of elemental hygiene without the resources necessary.

Activist and resident of Central Havana Maria Lopez said that in her neighborhood the water arrives “every three, five, eight days and because of that we do not have the ability to protect ourselves against coronavirus or any other disease.”
