According to Stalinist dictator Fidel Castro (and his U.S. based agents-of-influence which obviously includes the mainstream media) Elian’s father Juan Miguel was a sincerely grief-stricken father who–acting completely on his own free will as everyone does in communist countries–simply wanted his son back home in Cuba with him.
According to most Cuban-Americans (i.e. people with first-hand experience of how communists operate) Fidel Castro was holding a gun (invisible to most naive Americans) to Juan Miguel’s head and forcing him to recite a script. Result?

Yes, some people are just stupid and will believe whatever is pitched at them by “reliable” or “professional” sources, and some people have never heard anything other than the official script about the “revolution,” but LOTS of people are simply willfully blind and/or fashion victims and DO NOT CARE what the actual facts are. Ignorance exists, but so does HIJEPUTEZ, and how.
But still. the likes of Katie Couric favored the child being turned over to his father, even if not his biological one, so there is that. I mean, who would know best, Katie Couric or “those people”?
