Surprise! Landmark Cuban building collapses in Havana

From our Socialist Art of Making Ruins Bureau

Havana was once a beautiful city, on this many can agree.

And it is now a labyrinth of ruins, falling to pieces, crumbling bit by bit, save for a few tiny areas dedicated to tourists, diplomats, and oligarchs.

Here’s one of the latest of its many “derrumbes”… (Image above)

Loosely translated from CiberCuba:

A new collapse occurred last Thursday in Havana, in a building located on the corner of Galiano and San Lázaro streets, a very central area of Havana.

The property sustained extensive damage from a collapse of its facade (walls and windows), which left parts of both the first and second floors exposed to the elements.

The photos published in his Twitter account by the user identified as Liborio in Cuba show the rubble on the street, as well as some barriers blocking access to Galiano street.

“Cuba is falling apart,” he said.

In the comments to the publications, Internet users regret the event, one more example of the material decline in which the city is plunged.

“What a shame, that historical building itself is architecturally significant”; “And let two or three more downpours fall. Havana is crumbling to dust”; “So are the lies of the Cuban government, they fall alone, of their own weight”; “Until when? … and so they continue to build new luxury hotels” and “What a pity that nobody seems to care. The tyranny says that it has more important issues to worry about.” These were some of the complaints expressed on social networks.

The report of partial and total collapses in Cuba is constant, where the deterioration of its buildings, both private and public, is palpable.

After decades of carelessness on the part of the authorities, many buildings that years ago wore their artistic and constructive splendor, today are true insurmountable ruins. The worst thing is that many of them inhabit people at the constant risk of being crushed to death, while the government only deals with raising new luxury hotels.
