Surprise! Socialist Spain outlaws all praise of its Franco dictatorship, but not of Castro dictatorship in Cuba

From our Bureau of Offensive, Ginormous, Nauseating, and Colossal Double Standards

What a surprise, eh?

Who could have ever expected a government run by a socialist/communist coalition to outlaw free speech in any way?

And who could have ever predicted this latest manifestation of Spanish infatuation with Castrogonia?

The new Democratic Memory Law could declare “illegal” the Francisco Franco Foundation and other associations that vindicate the dictatorship suffered by Spain between 1936 and 1978.

However, state-subsidized political parties or entities may continue to exalt totalitarian regimes such as those of Cuba or Venezuela.

“The scope of the law is limited to Spain and the period it covers, from the coup d’état of 1936, the Civil War, the Franco dictatorship, exile, until the entry into force of the 1978 Constitution”, A source from the First Vice Presidency of the Spanish Government responded in writing to Radio Televisión Martí.

When asked if the law would affect Spanish associations financed with public money, which explicitly defend Castroism and Chavismo, or claim totalitarian regimes such as Stalin’s, the official source pointed out: “We are not aware that there are associations financed with public money like the ones you describe. “

“In Spain there are at least a hundred organizations, some subsidized by public administrations, that exalt dictatorships or other authoritarian regimes. There are even political parties, with representation in the Government and in Congress, that openly defend the interests of Castroism and Chavismo, “says Alejandro González Raga, executive director of the Cuban Observatory for Human Rights.

You don’t have to do much research to find them. United We Can (UP), the party headed by the second vice president of the Government, Pablo Iglesias, received in 2020 almost five million euros in state subsidies.

For Iglesias, Fidel Castro is “a benchmark for Latin American dignity and sovereign resistance.”

The list of praise for the Cuban dictator, demonstrations or events, by UP, Izquierda Unida or the Communist Party of Spain, is public knowledge.
