On This Date in History 1965: Freedom Flights began for Cuban refugees escaping communist tyranny

Although my parents came to the U.S. before the Freedom Flights began, I have several family members, including my grandparents, who were able to escape the brutal repression of the socialist Castro dictatorship on these flights.

On Nov. 6, 1965, a formal agreement between the United States and Cuba allows Cubans who wanted to leave the island nation for America to do so. More than 250,000 Cubans had taken advantage of this opportunity by 1971.
