Another building collapse in Havana leaves young Cuban man with multiple fractures

Building collapse across from the Malecon in Havana leaves a young man with multiple fractures

A partial collapse of a multifamily building across from the Malecon in Havana on Tuesday left Kendris Puig Gonzalez with multiple fractures and other injuries.

The independent news service 14yMedio reports that the collapse took place at Building 31 on Malecon Avenue between Prado and Carcel in Central Havana, just a few meters away from the luxurious Paseo del Prado Hotel.

Barbara Gonzalez Socarras, the young man’s mother, said that Kendris suffered fractures in his pelvis, clavicle, and both arms and was taken to the Juan Manuel Marquez hospital where he is reportedly in stable condition.

Barbara, who resides in the building, was also injured.

The residents of the building, which has been condemned since the 1990s, decided to spend the night in the surrounding alleys and at the Malecon seawall out of fear the building might completely collapse.
