Journalist Esteban Rodriguez being held in a maximum security prison with hands and feet shackled
Cubalex is reporting that Cuban independent journalist and activist Esteban Rodriguez was transferred to a maximum security prison in Guanajay in the province of Artemisa on Sunday, June 13.
According to a statement by his wife Zuleidis Gomez Zepero to news agency ADN Cuba, the independent journalist is being kept in an isolation cell by himself and in what is referred to as “Shakiras,” shackles that immobilize his hands and feet.
“My worry is that a person — Esteban Rodriguez — who is being accused of Disorderly Conduct, has been transferred to a maximum security prison,” said Gomez Cepero.
The wife said that when he was transferred, Castro authorities did not allow him to take “the food or the bucket for water that he had.”
The independent journalist has been imprisoned since April 30 where he was arrested for participating in a peaceful protest on Obispo Street in Havana. The protest was demanded they be allowed to see Luis Manuel Otero Alcantara, the founder of the San Isidro Movement, who at the time was on a hunger strike.
