An even dozen: 12th Cuban baseball player defects from the national team in Mexico

A dozen Cuban baseball players have now defected from the national team in Mexico with Geisel Cepeda becoming the 12th player to escape slavery under the communist Castro regime.

Via Periodico Cubano (my translation):

Cuban baseball player Geisel Cepeda became the twelfth player to defect from the Cuban team during its participation in the third under-23 Baseball World Cup in Mexico.

The 23-year-old Cuban prospect was supposed to join the Mochis team in Mexico, but will not play out that contract according to journalists Yordano Carmona from Pelota Cubana and Jorge Ebro from El Nuevo Herald.

Cepeda decided not to board the October 3 flight back to Cuba, breaking his contract and rendering it null and void.

Up until now, he is the latest player to defect and refuse to return to the island. The rest of the team is scheduled to return to Cuba on Monday, October 4.

You cannot overstate how embarrassing and humiliating this mass defection of star athletes is to the communist Castro dictatorship.
