Nelva Ismarays Ortega expressed concern about the inhumane and unacceptable conditions of detention in which her husband, the Cuban opposition leader José Daniel Ferrer García, finds himself in the Mar Verde prison.

According to Ortega, a doctor by profession, Ferrer García faces various ailments and a lack of adequate food and hygiene. “His health is very deteriorated, very affected and it is very worrying. An S.O.S is necessary,” he declared

Dr. Ortega said that the political prisoner has been threatened twice by an officer, identified as “Major Ortiz”, for demanding respect for his rights in prison. In her opinion, the regime is cruel to the Coordinator of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU) for his activism in defense of human rights and for his non-violent civic struggle in order to achieve change, and bring democracy to Cuba.

“He is the dissident who has given them the most headaches and they know that people love him, respect him and follow him, and that being on the streets is going to be a danger, especially after July 11, the social outbreak in that Cubans took to the streets, “he declared.

Ferrer, has been detained since Sunday, July 11, when he left his home with his son to join the protests in the city of Santiago de Cuba. He is currently serving four years and 14 days in prison for allegedly having failed to comply with the limitation of freedom requirements established in a sanction previously imposed in 2020.
