Prisoners Defenders documents more than 1,000 political prisoners in Cuba in one year

The NGO Prisoners Defenders documented more than 1,000 political prisoners between February of 2021 until the end of January 2022.

According to a statement released by the judicial action and pro-democracy defense organization, 1,054 Cubans classify as prisoners of conscience during this period.

The statement explains that in February of 2021, there were 137 cases of individuals imprisoned for political reasons, but “since then and until the end of January 2022, another 917 have been added to the list.”

It also points out that the number is only a fraction since there are likely many more unknown due to the impossibility of obtaining information from the regime. The government does not acknowledge the existence of political prisoners in Cuba and does not offer any statistics on them.

In addition, the organization has been able to verify 794 political prisoners from the total who are imprisoned for participating in the July 11 protests in Cuba.
