More than 200 anti-government protests in Cuba during the month of February

Seven months after massive peaceful protests swept across Cuba and despite a violent crackdown on dissent, the Cuban people continue to bravely protest the communist Castro dictatorship.

Cuba: More than 200 anti-government protests in February

In Cuba there were 207 public protests against the regime in the month of February, according to the Cuban Observatory of Conflicts (OCC).

Of the 207 protests, 130 (63%) were politically and civilly motivated. The majority of them were in regard to the abuses, judicial arbitrariness, and the long prison sentences handed down to peaceful protesters from July 11 as well as the tortures and abuse in prisons, said OCC in its monthly report.

Meanwhile, 77 (37%) of the protests documented were for economic and societal reasons, motivated primarily by the lack of basic products such as milk, abuse of labor rights, the rejection stores that sell only in MLC [dollars only stores], and the widespread feeling of insecurity.

The 207 protests that took place in February are nearly identical to the 203 that took place in April of 2021, three months before July 11, the OCC pointed out.

According to the OCC, which measures national conflict and the way its worsening affects the governance of the country, as in previous months, the protests are characterized by their non-violent guerilla style (individuals or groups of two or three)..
