President of the EU Parliament calls for the release of political prisoners in Cuba

It would be great if all the countries in the European Union would stand up for human rights in communist Cuba, but at least this is a start.

President of the European Parliament demands the release of Cuban political prisoners

On Saturday Roberta Metsola, the president of the European Parliament, demanded the release of Cuban political prisoners.

Metsola, who has been president of the EU Parliament since January, released a photograph of her along with Cuban opposition leader and winner of the EU’s Sakharov Prize Guillermo Fariñas.

On social media, Metsola posted that “I support the dissidents in Cuba who are fighting against authoritarianism.”

She also said that “the Cuban regime needs to release political prisoners and respect human rights.”

The official affirmed that the European Parliament will always defend freedom.

The Cuban opposition leader appeared before the European Parliament’s Human Rights subcommittee in Brussels on Thursday where he asked for a redoubling of support for the struggle for democracy in Cuba.
