Another top baseball prospect escapes Cuba to seek career in the Major Leagues

The Castro dictatorship has lost another top young prospect who has chosen to live in freedom and reap the benefits of his talents instead of having the communist regime take it from him.

Young baseball player Danell Figueroa abandons Cuba

The young native of Matanzas, Danell Figueroa, a catcher who stood out as a top prospect in Cuban baseball, has left the island for the Dominican Republic in the hopes of signing a contract with a Major League team.

The news came in a report by sports journalist Francys Romero who said that at 17, the young baseball player “was considered the most developed catcher in his class among all others in Cuba.”

Figueroa debuted this season in the 61st National Series with the Matanzas Crocodiles and exhibited his power as a batter hitting his first homerun in less than two weeks.

“He only played in nine games, but made a big impression with his defensive abilities,” said Romero.

Figueroa had 11 at-bats where he had two singles, a homerun, and a double.
