Remembering when ABC News raved about Cuba’s murderous communist dictatorship

The American news media that wants you to believe they are defenders of freedom and democracy is the same American news media with a decades-long history of heaping praise on murderous dictators.

FLASHBACK: ABC Gushed Over Commie Cuba: ‘Delivering the Most to Those Who Had the Least’

The network newscasts are admirably exposing the horrors and war crimes perpetrated by ex-KGB agent Vladimir Putin against Ukraine. But we should never forget their long history of fawning over many communist thug dictators. It was 33 years ago this week that World News Tonight gushed over the brutal Fidel Castro for “delivering the most to those who had the least.”

Then-anchor Peter Jennings portrayed the nation where dissidents were jailed or killed as a paradise with a high literary rate. Here’s Jennings on April 3, 1989:

[…]

ABC journalists sure sounded like PR tools for the communist Castro. On October 11, 2002, Barbara Walters gushed, “For Castro, freedom starts with education. And if literacy alone were the yardstick, Cuba would rank as one of the freest nations on Earth. The literacy rate is 96 percent.” Of course, if one were to use freedom as the yardstick for freedom, Castro’s brutal legacy would fail miserably.

  1. Walters is over 90 now and may or may not be lucid, but even if she is, she’s never going to apologize to “those people” for her repugnant performance during her 1977 visit to Cuba to “interview” the Bearded Bastard. I have held her in utter contempt since then, though maybe she thought she was being “balanced.” The trouble is, there would have been no such “balance” with a right-wing figure despised by the left.

  2. No one in the left news media ever praised Pinochet who left office without leaving his country a shambles or becoming a dictator.
No one in the left media ever apologized for Susan Starr going To Russia and praising the government there, for Shirley MacLaine gushing over the adorable children in Chinese schools as she told us Americans have a lot to learn from the Chinese Communists how to educate children, for those who visited Arafat and gushed over him, for CNN telling us that in order to have accessibility to report on Iraq they have to report Iraqi government propaganda or they would lose their privileges. In every case the left media reported these things and never noticed or considered it important to include in their reporting the many thousands of deaths, tortures, reeducation camps, or destruction of lives these bastards were engaging in at the very moment they were making love to them.. Remember Obama in Cuba? Ugh, inc.

These same left media in the meantime used their “objective” reporting to put down Republicans, and conservatives here non stop.

Such faithful servants of the truth.
And this has been going on for decades. Why don’t more Americans learn this, see this?

    • Why don’t more Americans see this? Oh, they see it, as the hypocrisy could hardly be more obvious. The problem is that hypocrisy is perfectly routine and acceptable to the left, as long as it’s their hypocrisy and suits their agenda. The ends simply justify the means to them.

I think that part of the problem is that Americans confuse all Latin American countries and they genuinely believe that Cuba before castro was a cross between Guatelmala and Haiti. I’ve spoken to non-left leaning Americans who really believe the propaganda that Cuba before castro was run by a tiny corrupt group of Batista cronies in cahoots with the Mafia. Thus, when they see that Barbara Walters or Peter Jennings special, they think, well, castro is a dictator, but at least he gave the Cubans education and medicine and kicked the mafia out of Cuba and closed down the bordellos.

        • Yes, part of it is disinformation, since the usual media suspects are hardly interested in the truth about Cuba, neither pre nor post-1959. However, there is no question that leftists are inherently hypocritical, routinely so, and have zero problem with that. It’s simply a matter of convenience and whatever suits them.
