Another journalist from Cuba’s state-run media defects

Claiming she could no longer be a “spokesperson for lies,” regime journalist Amanda Toirac has fled communist Cuba. Perhaps some American journalists can learn a thing or two from this.

Another regime journalists defects from Cuba: ‘I began to leave when I realized I was a spokesperson for lies’

Radio Rebelde radio host and television journalist Amanda Toirac has defected from Cuba. She announced it in a post on Facebook where she admitted being “a spokesperson for lies on a radio station” without saying where she is now located.

“I don’t know how many times I’ve erased these words. I’ve been trying for quite a while to find the words I need to say, the right ones, the difficult ones. I took this photo the day I left Cuba for posterity and I swear I think I was smiling,” she wrote on her post.

According to Toirac, the day she left Cuba she discovered she had actually left quite a while ago, “little by little, since July 11 last year.”

“I began to leave when I was ordered to oppress my countrymen, and when I refused to do it, I saw the true face of the monster they had turned my country into. A country that collapsed before my eyes, a country that existed only in my mind.”

“I began to leave when I realized I was a spokesperson for lies on a radio station. I was ashamed to know people where listening to Amanda Toirac reading those things. Those things we all knew were not true. I was allowing myself to be used for that. I began to leave when I found myself to be complicit and dishonest. I could no longer bear feeling like that.,” she added.
