#ElonBuyCuba begins to trend on Twitter

Elon Musk obviously can’t buy Cuba, but it’s a great way to bring attention to the cause of freedom on the island and the brutal repression of the communist Castro dictatorship.

#ElonBuyCuba is trending on Twitter

Cubans have pushed the #ElonBuyCuba hashtag to trend on Twitter with the goal of getting the attention of South African entrepreneur Elon Musk, who just reached a deal to buy the social media platform for $44 billion.

“Of course Elon isn’t going to buy Cuba, It’s about getting the owner of Twitter to learn that there’s a dictatorship in Cuba and to stand against it. This would give our cause more visibility than ever before,” said one individual who has joined the virtual campaign.

The trending hashtag began to go viral after Musk closed the deal with Twitter. It became worldwide news because the richest person on the planet will become the only owner of one of the most famous virtual platforms used by politicians, businesspeople, artists, and citizens of all ideological stripes.

“Freedom of expression is the basis of a functional democracy. And Twitter is the digital public square and Twitter is the digital public plaza where vital issues are debated for the future of humanity,” said Musk in a press release. This led to some Cubans to see this an ideal opportunity to spread the message regarding the violations of that right and other rights on the island.

“For freedom of expression to exist, no one should ever again face discrimination because of the way they think,” wrote one supporter.

Others handled the hashtag with a bit of humor, showing the regime how an entity with the ability to negotiate a large transaction with an entrepreneur would allow them to escape the crisis they’re suffering in Cuba.

“It shouldn’t even be legal, but if Mr. Musk offers the Council of State the same amount he paid for Twitter, I’m almost certain they would at least entertain the offer,” said another supporter.
