Actor James Franco has played an impressive number of roles during his relatively brief career, including one based on a true story in which his character had to cut off his own arm in order to survive.

Well, Mr. Franco is now slated to play another true life role in which his character could have to cut off lots of heads, so to speak. But, of course, Hollywood is not likely to focus on Fidel’s murderous legacy. Let’s see how this one turns out.

So, now that Cuban actress Ana de Armas is playing Marilyn Monroe (and catching a lot of criticism for having a Cuban accent), we will now have the chance to see a former Yale graduate student playing Fidel.

One of the scriptwriters wrote the screenplay for the hagiographic Che pic “Motorcycle Diaries”. So be prepared. Expect the usual adherence to Ministry of Truth standards.

A question for the casting director: Hey, why couldn’t you get Justin Trudeau to play this role. He would be perfect.

From Deadline:

Oscar nominee and 2x Golden Globe winner James Franco will play Cuban leader Fidel Castro in Miguel Bardem’s Alina of Cuba with Imagen Award winner Mía Maestro set to play Natalia “Naty” Revuelta, the Cuban-born socialite he has a passionate love affair with.

They join previously announced actress Ana Villafañe who is portraying Alina Fernandez aka Castro’s Daughter. The screenplay from Oscar-nominated scribe Jose Rivera (The Motorcycle Diaries) and Pulitzer Prize winner Nilo Cruz, follows the true-life story of Cuban exile turned social advocate, Fernandez, whose birth was the result of the tryst between Revuelta and Castro. Revuelta sacrificed her and her physician husband’s personal belongings and finances to help fund the start of the communist revolution.

Fernandez learned that she was Fidel Castro’s daughter at the age of 10 when after years of secret visits to her home, her mother finally revealed that “El Comandante” was her biological father. Alina grew to become one of Castro’s most outspoken critics, arrested on more than one occasion for trying to leave, and was classified as a dissident forbidden to travel outside of Cuba. Ultimately, she defected to Spain in 1993, an event that drew headlines from every major news network around the world, before she made Miami her permanent home.

  1. Is Alina still in Miami? There were rumors a while back that she went back to Cuba, but maybe she visited and didn’t stay. Miguel Bardem is a cousin of the actor Javier Bardem, and I expect that, like the latter, he is very properly leftist. Ana Villafañe is of Cuban and Salvadoran descent and apparently grew up in Miami. She played Gloria Estefan in the play based on her life. We shall see, but I’m not holding my breath (I already dislike the title, which is not a good omen).

For what it’s worth, John Leguizamo (who’s Colombian) slammed Franco’s casting because “He ain’t Latino.”

Franco’s career has been affected by accusations of sexual abuse by multiple women, with whom he settled for over two million dollars. His ancestry includes Jewish, Swedish and Portuguese elements.

As for Justin, they couldn’t use him because he’s prettier than the leading lady–too distracting.
