State television in the municipality of Cárdenas, Matanzas, confirmed that the regulated white sugar that was sold this month to the population contained “fragments of foreign matter that are not soluble” or fit for human consumption.

In a Facebook post, the local Telebandera assured that after several complaints from consumers, who criticized the physical appearance and coloration of the product, a sample was taken to the laboratory of the Municipal Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology of Cárdenas, “where the presence of objectionable particles (pieces of materials that vary in size and quantity)”.

“According to specialized standards, given the current conditions, this food product is not suitable for human consumption,” and its sale was ordered to stop, the publication said.

The sugar was distributed in the network of warehouses, in the cycle corresponding to November, and will be discarded. Consumers who wish to return it will be able to do so and it will be replaced when a new shipment arrives, the outlet explained.

“The Public Health institution told the Municipal Company of Commerce and Gastronomy to stop the sale of sugar in all the warehouses in the territory. At the moment, an investigation is being carried out, guided by the local authorities, to sample all the sugar found in the units, a process that should be extended until the beginning of the week,” the information specified.

  1. Sorry, but this is still normal for a third-world shithole. In other words, it does NOT matter–even though the poorest Cubans in the pre-Castro era would never had had to deal with such a problem. Gracias, Fidel.

    Of course, there’s another way to look at it: this is sugar’s revenge against the system that destroyed an industry which was once the best in the world. But it’s OK; the usual suspects are fine with it.
