Cuban political prisoners being abused in prison

Thursday, December 8, marked nine days in a punishment cell for political prisoner Fernando Vazquez Guerra, who is being held in the second detachment of the Kilo 7 prison in Camagüey.

Vazquez Guerra, who worked as a coordinator for the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU) in that province, said via telephone that penal authorities are committing “acts of torture against prisoners who demand food, medical care, and revision of their sentences.”

Two days ago, the opposition leader’s wife had a visit scheduled with him and was denied entry when she arrived. Prison authorities confirmed to her that he was being held in a punishment cell.

Ana Belkis Ferrer is also calling attention to the case of political prisoner Aymara Nieto Muñoz, a member of UNPACU, a promoter in Cuba, and also a member of the Ladies in White.

Nieto was recently returned to the El Guatao prison, located in the capital, after spending more than 2 years at the women’s prison in Las Tunas. She suffers from serious hypertension and is being denied medical care.

“They cynically told her she should go see her family doctor. It is a mockery, ridiculous, outrageous to say such a thing to a woman in such a situation,” said Ana Belkis Ferrer to CubaNet.
