Fifty Cuban opposition groups ask the U.S. not to negotiate with the regime

More than 50 Cuban opposition organizations both on and off the island asked Joe Biden in a letter not to engage in dialogue with the regime in Havana until Cubans “can decide their own destiny.”

They also asked to keep the Cuban government on the State Sponsors of Terror list.

The signers of the letter, which was delivered to the White House on Thursday, reject “policies of appeasement” and warn of the threat the “Cuban dictatorship” presents to “the lives of millions of Cubans and U.S. national security as well as the rest of the continent.”

Among the organizations addressing President Biden is the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU), whose leader, Jose Daniel Ferrer, has been imprisoned since 2021 subjected to continuous torture. The letter, titled “President Biden, extend your hand to the Cuban people,” looks to spread their request “through him” to other democratic leaders in North America and the rest of the world.

The signers say their missive was motivated by the meetings held between U.S. government officials and Cuba since 2022. The most recent one, addressing law enforcement, was held in Havana on January 18 and 19.

The opposition groups expressed their “indignation” because those meetings did not address issues such as the “humanitarian crisis” in Cuba, which they extensively describe. Neither do the meetings address the repression, which they classify as “State terrorism,” unleashed on the people after the peaceful protests of July 11, which they cited using various examples as well.
