Massive power outage plunges nearly all of Cuba into darkness

The wonders of socialism never cease in communist Cuba. More than three-quarters of the largest island in the Caribbean went dark on Saturday after yet another collapse of the electrical grid.

Massive blackout in Cuba: From Matanzas to Guantanamo left without electrical service

Just five days after the failure of the National Electromagnetic System that caused a massive blackout for the eastern half of Cuba, the country was once again left without electrical service on Saturday from Matanzas to Guantanamo.

“There are reports of an outage from the province of Matanzas to Guantanamo. The causes are being investigated at the moment. We will provide more information once we learn the reasons for the failure,” the Electric Union of Cuba said in a press release on Saturday.

The news was confirmed on social media by Lazaro Manuel Alfonso, a journalist for state-run media. He posted that there was a “disconnection in the national electrical system” that affected ten Cuban provinces, from Matanzas to Guantanamo.

At the time this report was published, the causes for the outage, leaving more than 5.5 million Cubans living in the affected provinces without electricity, were not known.
