Did your parents watch Lawrence Welk to catch Anacani sing in Spanish?

This is a post for those of us who did not grow up in Miami or had the sounds of Cuba blasting from every window or radio frequency. The legendary Lawrence Welk was born in North Dakota on this day in 1911. He died in 1992.

Many years ago, Welk’s show started at 6:30 pm in most places. Every Cuban kid probably remembers “The Lawrence Welk Show” and the young lady Anacani who sang in Spanish. My parents loved it.

Welk was a very talented musician and one of the most popular hosts ever.   He understood his audience and gave them exactly what they wanted.    His song “Calcutta” was # 1 in 1961. As far as my parents were concerned, this little segment with Anacani was great.
