Cuban once against attempts to conquer Everest: ‘I’m taking the flags of liberty for Cuba with me’
They call him the Cuban mountaineer. His name is Yandy Nuñez, and on Monday he began his journey to Nepal from Iceland, where he lives, in his attempt to realize his dream with Cuban in his heart: climbing Mount Everest in the Himalayas.
“I’m taking the flags of liberty for Cuba, not only Homeland and Life. I believe that’s the most important one,” said Nuñez to Radio Television Martí from Helsinki before boarding a flight to New Delhi and then another flight to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal.
The height and the Khumbu icefall are his greatest challenges, which do not stop arousing fears.
“They’re blocks of ice and there, in that area, there is always the danger that one of them will break off,” said the mountaineer.
Before starting his journey to Nepal, Nuñez posted some photos on social media.
“Here I am, folks, again on my way to realize my greatest desire, to reach the summit of the world’s tallest mountain. Love live Cuba,” wrote Nuñez on Facebook standing in an airport in Iceland before heading out to Helsinki.
In 2021, his expedition to Mount Everest was canceled. At the time, he described the trip as “marvelous.” Furthermore, he has promised his millions of Facebook followers to take Cuba to the “highest point in the world.”
