UN Human Rights official visits Cuba, ignores dissidents, meets only with their oppressors

The U.N. Human Rights Council has a long history of not only being useless, but also being a cruel joke, filled as it is with representatives from the most repressive nations on earth, such as Cuba and China.

So, in keeping with their long tradition of placing the policing of human rights abusers in the hands of representatives from brutal governments, the U.N. has appointed Alena Douhan from Belarus as its “Special Rapporteur” on the negative impact of coercive measures.

This week, Douhan showcased the U.N.’s black humor by visiting Cuba and speaking only with the top brass of its repressive machinery.

Cuban activists reacted to the visit to Cuba of Alena Douhan, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on the enjoyment of human rights.

The leader of the Ladies in White, Berta Soler, on behalf of the women’s group, posted a comment on Facebook in which she described the visit as “totally disrespectful.”

The opponent said that the rapporteur “ignored the harassment, persecution and imprisonment for political reasons of human rights activists and political opponents; the cruel and inhumane treatment to which the more than 1,000 political prisoners are subjected in Cuban jails and prisons; and political and social repression in general”.

The main mandate of the official is to verify the negative repercussions of unilateral coercive measures on the enjoyment of human rights and to make recommendations on ways and means to prevent, minimize and remedy the negative repercussions of coercive measures.

Regarding her visit to Havana, opposition member Ramón Zamora Rodríguez opined that it is “a lack of respect and an insult to the many complaints from the island about the systematic violations of human rights by the Castro Díaz-Canel regime against the Cuban people.”

  1. Ah, from Belarus. Perfect. Talk about a screaming fraud which is also an obscene insult. Classic UN move.
