Three players from the Cuban field hockey team defect in Barcelona

Three Cuban women defected from the national field hockey team, which is in Barcelona for a training.

The players are Yadira Miclin, Marianela López, and Daylin Suárez, and their whereabouts are currently unknown.

“In the last few hours, Cuban field hockey players Yadira Miclin, Marianela López and Daylin Suárez have left the team in Barcelona, Spain, according to sources,” writer and journalist Francys Romero reported on social media.

According to the Romero, the Cuban women’s field hockey team “is on a European tour in preparation for the 2023 Central American Games in San Salvador.”

Romero indicated that with the three new defections, more than 75 Cubans have left official delegations between 2022 and 2023.

“More than 75 Cuban athletes from more than 10 sports have defected between 2022 and 2023, and the number will continue to rise. That does not include those who have left by other means such as sports injuries, retirement, illegal or legal routes,” he added.

At the end of April, Cuban rowers Maykol Julio Álvarez, Yoelvis Javier Hernández, and Osvaldo Pérez left the team that competed in the qualifying rounds for the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile.

In March, talented Cuban wrestlers Yoannia Pérez (50 kg) and Liliana Duane (53 kg) took advantage of a stopover in Mexico to leave the Cuban delegation traveling to El Salvador.

Days before, Ivan Prieto, a bullpen catcher for the Cuban baseball team that competed in the fifth World Baseball Classic, defected before returning to Havana.

That same month, four Cuban karate athletes left the Island’s team, which was in Oaxtepec, Morelos, Mexico, to participate in the qualifying tournament for the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, and the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador.
