Cuban dictatorship imprisons 24 more dissidents in April, total number climbs to 1,048

From our Bureau of Socialist Tolerance, Compassion, and Social Justice

Prisoners Defenders has been able to verify a list of 1,048 political prisoners as of April 30, 2023. Of the 1,048 political prisoners. This month of April, 24 new political prisoners have entered our list .:

  • More cases of minors have surfaced on the list, now 31 boys and 4 girls, a total of 35 minors, who are still serving sentences (32 of them) or are being criminally prosecuted (3 of them). It must be taken into account that this high figure, however, does not include many other children who have already left the list for having fully served their sentences. A good part of the minors are found in prisons, presumably for minors , but they are completely penitentiary centers that are euphemistically called “ Integral Training Schools ”. In these penitentiary centers, with cells, a minimum of 150 children under 16 years of age are confined each year, as the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child denounced this June 9, 2022 in its Conclusions Report. in Cuba . The same Committee also highlighted how around 260 children aged 16 and 17 each year in Cuba are deprived of liberty in conventional prisons . Therefore, 410 minors are imprisoned every year in Cuba , as the United Nations itself has been able to confirm.
  • 18 of the minors mentioned are being prosecuted or have already been convicted of “Sedition”. The average sentence for these minors convicted of sedition is 5 years in prison , an average punishment higher than that suffered by adults in political prison before #11J.
  • From our current list, 204 protesters have been charged with sedition and at least 202 have already been sentenced to an average of 10 years in prison each.
  • With the entry into prison of 3 women this month, despite those who have left the list this month, the number of prisoners is 118 women (including several of the transgender gender) who still continue with orders and political convictions and of conscience .
  • All trans women in prison of conscience have been and are incarcerated between men , which also happens with common trans prisoners, suffering situations, between men, indescribable for their sexual condition.
