Newest twist to Cuban inflation: Banks and ATM’s have run out of paper currency

Castro, Inc. has run out of money, literally and figuratively. Rampant inflation has caused a shortage in paper currency and Castro, Inc. apparently has no funds with which to print more bills.

This latest shortage has left many Cubans in a desperate situation. In a cash economy you can’t buy anything without cash.

This disaster is affecting everyone, but especially those who rely on remittances from “the diaspora”, who –aside from oligarchs — are the only Cubans with ATM cards, spare cash, and bank accounts.

Cubans continue to complain about the issue of ATMs that do not have money, which makes life even more difficult for them and which the communist regime cares very little about solving.

This occurs in all the Cuban provinces, but the independent newspaper Diario de Cuba spoke with some inhabitants of Havana about this issue, which keeps natives without cash.

A Cuban who asked to keep her identity safe said that in addition to the fact that the ATMs are empty, the banks are not giving money to people who have savings accounts either.

“The shipment has been in the banks for exactly ten days and it has not been possible to obtain it. It is a country situation, ATMs do not have money for retirees. People who have savings accounts are going to the bank to get their money and the bank is not paying them. We have taken our receipt to seven different banks throughout Havana and it has not been possible to collect it,” said the woman.

She stated that in the banks, families are complaining because they need to be able to withdraw their money to cover their daily needs, or the little that can reach them in the midst of inflation in the country.

“Just yesterday there were almost ten families literally causing a ruckus in a bank because they have not been able to collect much larger drafts, but also some very small ones. They are family money orders that they are trying to collect and there is no response. The answer is that there is no money,” she adde
