Unable to treat patients due to lack of State resources, Cuban doctor publicly resigns

Frustrated by the shortages, corruption, and the slave wages of Cuba’s socialist healthcare system, a Cuban doctor took to social media and announced her resignation.

Cuban doctor resigns from her profession: ‘I can no longer cure or alleviate because there are no resources’

Alina Arcos Fernández-Brito, a Cuban doctor who worked at the Calixto García Hospital in Havana, published a heart-wrenching post on social media announcer her departure from her profession because she lacks the resources to alleviate or cure illnesses. This was compounded by the fact her profession no longer allows her to live with a minimum of dignity.

In a post on Facebook titled “Confession,” Alina Arcos Fernández-Brito laid out the sadness and helplessness that have led her to such a difficult decision.

“I no longer want to be a doctor. I can no longer cure or alleviate because I don’t have the resources to do so. I can’t even offer comfort and support in pain and sickness, because I myself am filled with sadness and despair. And one cannot offer what one does not have. I can no longer help others,” she admitted.

The healthcare professional, who is the sister of film critic Gustavo Arcos, mentioned that besides the lack of supplies to carry out her work properly, she also can’t “live with a minimum of dignity or decorum” practicing as a doctor. This is in clear reference to an insufficient salary, an issue that is a recurring theme in Cuba.

“I am exhausted from so much anguish, both others’ and my own. It doesn’t matter if I continue to go to the hospital or attend to patients. It’s not how it should be done. It’s like violating something sacred,” she added.

“I apologize to my patients… for what I always gave them and can no longer give. They don’t deserve it. Neither do I,” the doctor concluded her poignant post, which surely captures the feelings of many other colleagues, although not all have the courage to make such a radical decision.

  1. Nobody cares how bad the medical system is in Cuba. What matters is the rent-a-doc bu$ine$$ abroad.

Besides, as always, this is the fault of the US “blockade,” so the “revolution” is not responsible.
