While residential buildings in Cuba crumble, Castro dictatorship spends cash on concerts

The communist Castro regime is spending money on concerts to distract a population living in dilapidated buildings that haven’t been maintained in decades and are on the verge of collapse. This is socialism in action.

Via Periodico Cubano (my translation):

In Antilla, there’s no money to fix a building, but they pay thousands for a Charanga Habanera concert

Katyuska Batista, a resident of a building in the Holguin municipality of Antilla at risk of collapse, reported that the local government claims to lack funds for the necessary repairs; however, they are spending tens of thousands of Cuban pesos (CUP) on a concert by Charanga Habanera.

According to journalist Alberto Arego, who received the exclusive report, the recent falling of a railing in Batista’s building poses a serious danger, especially for the children and elderly people residing there. Despite the evident urgency of the situation, the residents have been informed there is no budget for the repairs.

“Just yesterday the railing fell, and just look at the photo. That was on Monday, and nobody from the government came. They came today, didn’t ask anyone. They sent four workers from Housing just to assess the building. Well, they themselves realized this is collapsing. They didn’t even want to go up because they were afraid,” said Katyuska Batista in her heartrending testimony.

Despite the warnings and clear signs of deterioration in the building’s structure, an effective solution has not been provided. The residents are facing days of anguish and imminent danger due to the absence of the railing that protects the property.

The concern and outrage among the neighbors are palpable. They have organized and signed a joint letter expressing their disagreement with the proposal for residents to cover the building repairs, when they believe it’s the government’s responsibility.

“Here, the neighbors who disagree with this have signed because they want us to pay for the building repairs. When that’s the government’s responsibility. According to them, they don’t have a budget to fix the railings, and then they want us, among the 20 apartments, to pay to have the railing fixed. We’re signing to say we won’t,” explains the Cuban woman indignantly about the situation.

The incomprehensible disparity between the lack of budget for building safety and the allocation of resources for entertainment events like the Charanga Habanera performance has generated a wave of criticism and questions within the community.

  1. One can only make “sense” of Cuba’s situation by seeing it from the regime’s perspective: the only real priority is to keep the powers that be in power, and “the people” are incidental, as in beside the point.
