As Cubans suffer through food and fuel shortages a collapsing healthcare system, and homes are crumbling from criminal negligence, the Castro dictatorship is investing in new cars to cater to foreign tourists and the police. Photos of a fleet of brand-new Hyundai vehicles being unloaded at the Port of Mariel were captured by Cubans, who expressed their disgust over the priorities of the communist regime. Obviously, Cubans can’t afford these new cars, so they will likely be used to generate tourist income for the State as rentals and the expansion of its machine of repression. This is socialism in action.

A fleet of Hyundai cars unloaded at the Port of Mariel
An image showing a fleet of Hyundai cars unloaded at the Mariel port in Artemisa was circulated on social media.
“Coming soon on the streets, definitely rented, Mariel port,” wrote Elvis Alpajón Gámez in the Facebook group “DIPLOMATIC CARS IN CUBA,” who shared the photo.
Numerous users in that group have reacted to Alpajón Gámez’s post, pointing out the government’s double standards amid the crisis the island is facing.
“How rich, the country falling apart and they can’t help but bring in more new cars to keep lining their pockets with dollars,” remarked one internet user sarcastically.
“For that, there is money, but for hunger, misery, and illnesses, nothing. There aren’t even ambulances. If that so-called blockade exists, they seem more like they’re for the National Revolutionary Police (PNR) rather than for tourism, in my opinion,” said another amidst a debate in the comments about whether the cars would be used as police patrols or for tourism rentals.
Last September, a batch of new patrol cars loaded on a couple of vehicle carrier trucks was spotted in the province of Ciego de Ávila.
The trucks, guarded by a motorcycle police officer, were parked on the side of a road.
“There are no ambulances, no hearses, but there are plenty of cars for the police to oppress the people,” concluded one commenter.
Around that same time, a batch of new cars, allegedly intended for tourist rentals in Cuba, was spotted by an internet user while being transported on several vehicle carrier trucks.
