Lifestyles of the Rich and Communist: Cuban prime minister’s son vacations in Spain as Cubans go hungry

Just because Cubans can’t afford or find enough food to eat, and medicine shortages plague the island, that doesn’t mean the Communist Party elite have to suffer. While Cubans are going hungry and wondering how to survive another day, Manuel Alejandro Marrero Medina, the son of Cuban prime minister Manuel Marrero, is vacationing in Spain and posting pictures of his travels on Instagram.

If he looks familiar, this is the same prime minister’s son who posted pictures of himself with the private jet he uses to travel around the world, along with photos of the luxurious hotels and restaurants he frequents thanks to his status as the family member of high-ranking communist official.

Manuel Marrero’s son enjoys a ‘kingly’ stay in Spain

Manuel Alejandro Marrero Medina, the son of the Cuban regime’s prime minister, Manuel Marrero, is currently in Spain. The vacation is evidenced by images circulated on social media by the website Cubans por el Mundo (Cubans Around the World).

The young man shared on his Instagram account some moments from his stay in the Iberian country. In the photos, he appears alongside several friends. One of the chosen places for enjoyment was the ancient city of Toledo, south of Madrid.

According to Cubans por el Mundo, Marrero Medina is enjoying a “vacation in Spain while his father, with a straight face, justifies the misery experienced entirely by the average Cuban.”

The website pointed out that Marrero’s son’s presence in the European country shows how “state resources are used as a personal bank account to lead this millionaire lifestyle.”

One of the stories shared by Marrero Medina alludes to Three Kings’ Day, celebrated last weekend.

Manuel Alejandro Marrero Medina became “famous” at the end of 2019, following his father’s appointment as prime minister. Shortly afterward, images of him were revealed on Instagram traveling in private jets, as well as enjoying parties and pools.

According to El Nuevo Herald newspaper, Manuel Alejandro Marrero Medina graduated with a degree in Sociocultural Studies and worked as a “commercial specialist” at Gaviota Tours, a company under the military conglomerate GAESA.

Following the scandal, Marrero Medina maintained a lower profile on social media, although he did not completely disappear.

In August 2022, the young man posted on the stories section of his Instagram account a poster against the Active Military Service (SMA), mandatory for males on the island. This occurred shortly after the explosion at the Matanzas Supertanker Base, in which several recruits from the local fire department died.

  1. Of course. This is what happens when people have no shame because they feel totally entitled to what they don’t even remotely deserve. Perfectly normal expression of that mentality. Besides, nowadays, everyone wants to show off on social media, so again, perfectly normal.

  2. So is he wearing one of those Apple watches? I wouldn’t be at all surprised. Yet, these parasites must know that social media is a public forum, and that they will most likely be found out–as has happened repeatedly to Sandro Castro. It would appear they feel so secure that they no longer worry about optics.

  3. I fully expect all the big shots in the regime have both money and property abroad in countries where, if they have to flee Cuba, they will probably not be bothered by the authorities. Thus, if the regime falls, the ones who get away can live very nicely despite having belonged to a criminal organization–la Cosa Castro.
