Ha! The gloves are off. Castro, Inc. is getting pummeled online by dissatisfied customers who are letting the world know how horrific those Cuban apartheid hotels can be. Apparently, the food shortages and other myriad problems caused by the economic collapse of Castro, Inc. are severe enough to affect the apartheid enclaves of foreign visitors. Some tourists are even complaining during their stay, warning others to stay away. “If you want to go hungry, this is the hotel I can most recommend,” said one such malcontent: “I wouldn’t recommend it even to my worst enemy. I’m staying here and starving.

A note recently published on CiberCuba about criticisms made by tourists who stayed at the Meliá Las Dunas hotel in Cayo Santa María, north of the Cuban province of Villa Clara, generated new comments on social media from dissatisfied visitors with their experience on the island.

Related mainly to the shortage and poor quality of food, the opinions gathered in the note also criticized the poor quality of service, lack of hygiene in hotels, and terrible room cleanliness, among other problems attributed to the mismanagement of hotels by Gaviota management and other Cuban entities.

Linked on the Cuba Headlines Facebook page, the note has received more than 80 comments, a large portion of which agreed with the criticisms outlined by this editorial.

“After reading many contradictory reviews about vacations in Cuba, I decided to share my impressions. Yes, there is food; but it’s probably impossible to eat, even with your eyes closed. Forget what it used to be like: all that abundance and ‘all-inclusive’ options have disappeared,” said the user identified on Facebook as Vladimir Mayer.

According to his words, the tourist traveled to Cuba with provisions in his suitcase. “I brought some things with me, and I’m living off of that. Yesterday, I didn’t eat anything in the restaurants. I couldn’t,” Mayer said in his comment.

Other tourists, he said, acted like him and traveled to the island with provisions. “People bring ketchup, mayonnaise, jam, peanut butter, and other condiments with them. I brought pâté and cheese. They have coffee, but I brought instant coffee with me,” he pointed out.

“Alcohol: there’s only rum and some whiskey available. That’s it. There’s no tonic water. The beer is just mud. No wine. Bring your favorite duty-free items. You get 1.5 liters of bottled water in your room daily. No more beer and cola,” Mayer added before recommending that tourists travel to Cuba with “small bills or coins.”

The bad reviews published on the TripAdvisor travel site continue to appear. Below, CiberCuba publishes the most recent among those that rate the Meliá Las Dunas in Cayo Santa María as terrible:

“If you want to go hungry, this is the hotel I can most recommend. I wouldn’t recommend it even to my worst enemy. I’m staying here and starving. For lunch, they offered me water biscuits with sausage… at the buffet, there are only noodles and rice. The only good thing it has is the paradisiacal beach. Want a beach chair? Get up at 5 am and leave a towel.

They don’t have chicken, butter, oil, lettuce, meat, fish, jam, and you’re lucky if you find bread for breakfast. The french fries are terrible, and you’re lucky if you find any. The employees are the only remarkable thing, but it’s regrettable that they have to face customers and don’t know what to say.

I confronted the owner, a rude and arrogant Spaniard, UNACCEPTABLE. I gave him constructive criticism: How can there be no food? And he told me to make do with the snack bar that has hamburgers. Haha, was that the same place where they offered me sausages with saltine crackers?”

  1. Well, it’s a third-world shithole, isn’t it? Why don’t they go to Dominican Republic, which is a far better deal?

They can complain till they’re blue in the face, but they’re totally responsible for their disappointment.

Also, if even tourists are getting screwed, what do they think ordinary Cubans with no money are getting?

    • Asombra, I hope that the tourists get even worse service than this. They deserve it. I also think that the Cuban people deserve freedom.
