Cuban prosecutors seek 10-year sentence for young woman who criticized the regime on social media

Sulmira Martinez Perez, a young social media influencer in Cuba, is facing 10 years in a Castro gulag for posting criticism of the communist Castro dictatorship on Facebook. The 22-year-old woman was arrested and has been jailed since January 2023, while she faces charges of contempt and crimes against the constitutional order.

Via CiberCuba (my translation):

The Cuban regime has requested a 10-year prison sentence for the young influencer Sulmira Martínez Pérez, known on social media as Salem, who was imprisoned in January 2023 due to her posts on Facebook.

According to the request from the Prosecutor’s Office, which was accessed by the outlet Martí Noticias, the 22-year-old is accused of inciting Cubans to protest against the regime of Miguel Díaz-Canel through a series of Facebook posts, in which she called for the repetition of the peaceful demonstrations of July 11, 2021.

The document details that she is charged with contempt and committing crimes against the constitutional order, which carry penalties of two years and nine years, respectively.

The combined requested sentence is 10 years in prison, along with additional penalties such as deprivation of rights, confiscation of property, and a travel ban from the national territory, in accordance with Articles 42.1, 52.1, and 59.1 of the Penal Code, explained the cited source.

Martínez Pérez has been detained since January 10, 2023, and despite having no prior criminal record, she has remained in Guatao prison under “provisional detention measure” since then.

This is a perfect example of how under socialism, the justice system is used as a weapon to silence and punish those who speak out against the government.

  1. Paging Barbara Lee! Paging Barbara Lee! Uh, ever mind. Remember, it’s NOT about race or social justice, despite the massive amounts of blather to that effect. It’s about what’s useful to a certain perverse agenda. Anyone who claims to be righteous and is OK with this obscene injustice is simply full of it. Period.
