Several children and a pregnant woman found themselves trapped after the building they were lived in Old Havana collapsed Thursday night. Lacking the resources necessary, it took firefighters quite a while to rescue them.
A multifamily building collapsed Thursday night, August 1st, in Old Havana, as confirmed by CubaNet.
The building, located at Villegas 256, between Obrapía and Lamparilla streets, collapsed around 8:10 pm. One woman was injured and several people, including children and a pregnant woman, were trapped inside.
Firefighters and rescuers slowly extracted the people as they lacked the means to do so quickly. The building’s staircase collapsed, leaving them unable to exit.
The incident occurred after the home of a man named Nelson collapsed. Firefighters spent about an hour trying to rescue the pregnant woman who was inside.
After a long wait, they managed to safely rescue two children and 11 other people.
People in neighboring buildings with deteriorated structures have also not been evacuated.
The Castro dictatorship’s criminal negligence has made building collapses a common occurrence in communist Cuba. The sparse construction materials available are diverted to building apartheid hotels for foreign tourists. This is socialism in action.
