The Argentine justice system decided on Tuesday to reopen the case of Mavys Álvarez, a Cuban woman who, at the age of 16, was brought to Argentina by soccer star Diego Armando Maradona with the approval of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro for a breast augmentation surgery.

The Argentine soccer star introduced her to Fidel Castro and took her to Buenos Aires for a breast augmentation surgery.
At that time, Cubans were strictly prohibited from leaving the country without an authorization known as “carta blanca,” which was carefully controlled by those in power.
Maradona, being a personal friend of Fidel Castro, was allowed to take Álvarez, despite her being underage and without her parents’ permission.
Maradona also introduced Álvarez to drugs and made her film intimate videos of their sexual encounters.
Álvarez’s lawyers argued that Castro played an “instrumental and necessary role” in the irregular transfer of the victim to Argentina.
“In any case, the victim remained in Argentina under Fidel Castro’s permission and was returned when he ordered it, meaning his control of the situation never ceased,” they stated.
Mavys Álvarez herself recounted how, during the two and a half months she spent in Argentina in 2001, she was not allowed to leave the hotels or the apartment in Buenos Aires without supervision.
“During my entire stay in the country, I was only able to choose two activities (one for shopping and one at the zoo), although I was always accompanied by someone until I returned,” she stated in her testimony.
“Furthermore, in Argentina, even though I was underage, I was pressured into undergoing breast augmentation surgery, which was performed without the authorization of any responsible person. In the same circumstances, I was given drugs in the country, which led to an addiction that lasted for many years. The consequences of what I went through still affect me today,” she added.
