Few animals left at a Cuban zoo in Havana

The shortages of food, fuel, medicine, and other necessary items in communist Cuba is not only affecting the humans on the island, but the animals too. At a zoo in the Cuban capital of Havana, visitors have been shocked to see how few animals remain at the attraction.

Via Periodico Cubano (my translation):

The Zoo 26, located in the Nuevo Vedado neighborhood of Havana, is facing an alarming situation with the remaining wildlife in its facilities.

Visitors who still come, motivated by the last breath of summer, are shocked by the visible deterioration of the place and the animals, who, desperate, approach people in search of food.

In an interview with 14 y medio, Susana, a mother from Havana, decided to take her 11-year-old son to the zoo before the new school year began, but the experience was disappointing. “There are more employees here than animals in cages. Everything is empty,” she said.

The park’s only hippopotamus, covered in green algae, approached the edge of the pond when he saw the child, who threw him a piece of chocolate. Susana, concerned about the animal’s reaction, quickly pulled her son away.

The mother remembers that in 2022 the situation was not so critical. “There were many more animals. Now the caregivers tell you to look closely at the water, but it’s impossible for there to be living beings in that murky, foul-smelling liquid where crocodiles are supposed to be,” she comments while observing the pond where, indeed, three crocodiles barely poke their heads among floating debris.

The few animals left at the zoo are not being fed very often, and one can only imagine they are not receiving proper care. But if the Castro dictatorship has no concern over the wellbeing of the Cuban people, it has even less concern for the animals.

  1. Asombra,

Remember a few years ago, some African country [I forget which] owed the dictatorship money and they paid giving the regime wild animals. Poor animals. What a fate.

What gets me is the absolutely inefficiency that regime is. Those mafiosos that run the country don’t give a shit about anything. And we all know dam well that since all of the institutions are LATRINE and THIRD WORLD, things get done ONLY through edicts. If Raul Castro were to give a command, that zoo would be fixed and the animals taken care of and fed, but he doesn’t give a shit and neither do any of his kids who run the country now that their LOCA father is 93 years old.

    • Of course they don’t care about the animals, since they don’t even care about ordinary Cubans, but they don’t shut down the zoos to save face, though they hardly have any face left to save.
