Neighbors catch thief in Havana, restrain him for two hours waiting for police to show up

A little bit of street justice

This story shines a light on Castro, Inc.’s priorities and also on the ever-growing crime wave that is sweeping across the entire island. While there are plenty of police to deploy against dissidents (see earlier post on Berta Soler), there is a definite shortage of police to tackle crime.

So, as in the case of the ever-growing mountains of uncollected trash — which neighbors set on fire — residents of the Playa neighborhood took it upon themselves to detain a thief and administer some rough justice as they waited for the police to haul him away. This incident occurred just a few blocks from what was once my house; so close, in fact, that I immediately recognized the building in the background.

From Cuba Headlines

Residents of Havana apprehended a thief and kept him restrained on the ground for over two hours, the time it took for the police to arrive and take him into custody. The incident occurred at the intersection of 23rd and 36th streets in the Playa municipality.

“Cubans forced to take justice into their own hands and capture a criminal due to the inefficiency of the PNR,” reported the Facebook page “La Tijera.”

According to the information, the individual was caught and “roughly handled” by the community. The crowd kept the thief tied up until a patrol car finally arrived. Images shared online show a crowd surrounding the police car as officers placed the man inside.

A witness revealed that there were two thieves, but one managed to escape. “This one suffered injuries to his mouth, reportedly from a bat,” added Armando Soil.

Details about what the thief attempted to steal or the location of the attempted robbery were not disclosed.
