Extended power outages spark several protests in Cuba

Frustrated and angry over power outages lasting almost entire days, the Cuban people have taken to the streets in protest. In several cities, spontaneous protests have broken out over the lack of action or answers from the Castro dictatorship on how they will fix the energy issue that has plagued the island for years now.

Via ADN Cuba (my translation):

In recent days, several popular protests have been reported on the island due to prolonged power outages. The repression has not been slow to follow either.

According to reports on social media, protests have occurred in Baguanó and Armando Mestre, both localities in the province of Holguín, and in the city of Sancti Spíritus.

The protest in Baguanó took place on October 15, after residents there had spent the entire day without electricity.

“No one is giving an explanation to the people who are out on the streets,” said one of the protesters.

“We want power!” people shouted in the town’s park.

There were also protests in the locality of Armando Mestre, in the same province of Holguín, on the night of October 16.

After the protest, the electricity service was restored.

Another report from the 14yMedio newspaper confirmed a protest in Sancti Spíritus on Tuesday.

The events took place in the Pina neighborhood, and two people were reportedly arrested.

According to data from the National Electric Company (UNE), Wednesday’s energy deficit was 1,589 MW during peak hours, and it is forecast to exceed 1,600 MW this Thursday.

The communist regime’s main response to these protests is not addressing the core issue causing the blackouts — socialism — but instead they respond with violent repression against the peaceful protesters. This is socialism in action.

  1. They can’t fix it because it’s too far gone. Besides, they’ll never prioritize it above their own interests.
