Bread rolls distributed through the ration book in Cuba getting smaller and smaller

After expropriating all private property and taking control of all means of production in Cuba, Fidel Castro’s socialist revolution promised to feed and care for the people and take care of all their needs. What the Cuban people have received, however, is food and medicine shortages, power outages, and a collapsed healthcare system.

Since the government does not allow the private sector to mass produce any food, the communist regime is in charge of distributing basic food items such as bread. Wheat shortages caused by the dictatorship’s corruption and incompetence has led the government to produce smaller bread rolls to give the impression they’re giving the people the same amount.

Via Periodico Cubano (my translation):

The economic crisis in Cuba has led to a reduction in the size of the regulated bread distributed through the ration book. Since September 13, 2024, Cuban authorities had announced that the weight of this staple product would be reduced from 80 to 60 grams.

The measure announced by the Ministry of the Food Industry (MINAL) was due to the limited availability of wheat flour in the country, essential for bread production. At the time, authorities stated that the reduction would be temporary and aimed to ensure that the entire population continued receiving their daily ration, avoiding interruptions in distribution. The price would also be adjusted, decreasing from 1 peso to 75 cents.

Three months later, readers of Periódico Cubano sent images to our newsroom showing the products delivered daily, confirming the ridiculously small size of the bread they receive.

The government consistently attributes the wheat flour shortage to financial difficulties and the restrictions imposed by the U.S. embargo, which complicates the international transactions needed to import this product. Cuba requires approximately 700 tons of flour daily to meet the demand for regulated bread, equivalent to about 21,000 tons per month.

This is not the first time a reduction in bread weight has been implemented due to flour shortages. In September 2023, in the province of Ciego de Ávila, the bread weight was reduced from 80 to 50 grams for similar reasons.

The misery and hunger being suffered by the Cuban people stands in sharp contrast to the abundance offered foreign tourists in the communist regime’s apartheid hotels and resorts. This is socialism in action.
