Trump has just chosen another nominee that will cause nightmares for the Castro dictatorship and other leftist regimes in Latin America. Mauricio Claver-Carone, a Cuban American lawyer who for years successfully lobbied for sanctions against the Cuban dictatorship and was a thorn in the side of the communist regime, is now the nominee as Special Envoy to Latin America.
Via Marti Noticias (my translation):
U.S. president-elect Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he will appoint Mauricio Claver-Carone, of Cuban origin, as a special envoy to Latin America.
Trump stated that Claver-Carone, who served in his administration during his first term, will help address issues related to migration and drug trafficking.
“Mauricio knows the region and how to put America’s interests FIRST,” Trump said on social media.
Claver-Carone was the director of the Inter-American Development Bank. In that role, he attempted to reduce the influence of Argentina and Brazil while giving smaller countries a more prominent voice, according to Reuters.
He was also a member of the National Security Council, worked in the Department of the Treasury, and served as the acting U.S. Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund.
The magazine Politico noted that this announcement reflects Trump’s focus on Western Hemisphere affairs.
Claver-Carone helped President Trump during his first term to define his sanctions policy toward Venezuela, Politico highlighted.
It also emphasized that Cuban-American Marco Rubio as Secretary of State, Claver-Carone as a special envoy, and former Ambassador to Mexico Christopher Landau as Deputy Secretary of State are seen as individuals with “considerable experience” in Latin American affairs.
With Claver-Carone and Marco Rubio leading Trump’s foreign policy, it’s hard to think of a worse nightmare policy scenario for Cuba’s communist dictatorship and its socialist allies in Latin America.
